PvP participation in classic is VERY low

Jun-23-2022 PST Category: WOW TBC Classic

You've probably read my thoughts on this issue in a separate thread, but I will try to give more information here.

PvP participation in the classic version is extremely low when compared to the first release of the expansions. It is because of a myriad of reasons, such as an outdated meta for pvp with no class/spec balancing the time required to set up gear and more.

Although i don't see the requirement for rating as a negative issue, a part of it is due to my playing over the requirements for every item. For those who aren't professionals it has become evident that the amount of time required by casual players to even complete a base set of pvp equipment is far more than what they're willing to commit to. This is coupled with the fact that fewer players are ignorant and are aware of how much they're handicapped going into BGs using full PvE gear , and you'll have more players who are not looking to join pvp.

With the removal of all requirements for rating for certain items, they become more accessible to non-pvp-focused players and encourages them play pvp in order to fill certain slots of gear for PvE because of the pvp-focused nature of gearing. This is fine since PvP gear is rarely ever competitive with the PvE equivalents of their counterparts within a raiding scenario. The PvPers with the highest level are usually focused on gear to ensure that they are playing on an equal field, rather than to increase their performance.

Expanding the pvp brackets as well as providing enjoyable rewards for those in low brackets (i.e. challenger, rival, and duelist) can help in increasing casual participation in pvp. Some examples could include unique weapon effects that enchant, tabards costumes, toys and more.

The most important factor to ensure higher participation in pvp than requirements for rating is the reduction in cost of time. If we take TBC to illustrate, the game takes hundreds, if not thousands of hours of work to earn the respect required to outfit a new character that is gearing two seasons outdated. This is an enormous time sink , only to be at a substantial disadvantage in gear when entering the arena. Blizzard has partially addressed this issue by changing the calculation of arena points to provide significantly higher less mlre points for lower rating However, I'd argue that reducing honor gear is WAY superior to arena gear in improving the pvp player participation.

The switch to personal rating systems is an excellent change because it gives you more freedom in playing with various kinds of players.

Finally, if we don't modify anything and just leave Wotlk as it is. I am concerned that we'll witness a significant drop in casual participation since without a substantial casual player base that can meet the requirements for rating for gear will be very difficult. This creates a situation where the only people who participate in PvP are the min maxers. A lot of casual raiders are unable to the idea of attempting to arena since there aren't any rewards that appeal to players who are focused on PvE And achieving a level to be eligible for rewards is incredibly hard.
